Oz the Great and Powerful ...

Still coming back to Earth after a great weekend in Newport Beach.
We ended up doing sooo much.
As you may know ... (as if the title didn't give it away) ... Friday was the opening of
Oz the Great and Powerful.

My kids and I love opening nights ... so off to  Oz we went.
We decided to do it up right ... enjoying Cinepolis Luxury Cinema ... Laguna Niguel.
Not only do they have a cocktail lounge ... reserved seating ... and dessert bar  ... but
could ya be more comfortable?  Leather lounge chairs ... that reclined all the way back ...
individual tables ... menus ... and call buttons to summon the waiters.
Bring on The Wizard.
Directed by Sam Raimi (Spiderman Trilogy) ...
the film starred ...
Mila Kunis ... Theodora
Michelle Williams ... Glenda
Rachel Weisz ... Evanora
and  James Franco ... the Wizard.
The movie is a "prequel" to  The Wizard of Oz  ... complete with the
Emerald City ...
 the Munchkins ...
(By the way... does anyone else think The Emerald City and it's inhabitants remind you of
"The Capitol" and it's strange citizens ... in The Hunger Games?)
 and Flying Monkees.
(This particular little winged primate was one of my favorite characters in Oz)
As we all know ...Oz is known for its unusual and magical creatures.
For my money ... The China Girl ... was the best actress in the film.

Oz the Great and Powerful ...
though entertaining ... was not quite as
"powerful" as we were hoping for.  This is Oz ... we expect AMAZING.

James Franco ...  not my favorite choice for the Wizard.
For reasons I can't quite put my finger on ... that innate "charm" was missing.
The ladies were only slightly better ...
but maybe we can blame it on the storyline ... which seemed a bit lackluster.

Having said all this ... was the movie as great as we hoped it would be?
No ... but maybe we expected too much.
Was it entertaining and a great family movie?
Absolutely.
Would I see it again?
No ... probably not ... but it's a definite keeper to watch again at home.
After all it is Oz.

So ... not a big thumbs up ... but I definitely think you should see it.
And ... in case you haven't seen one ... (which seems improbable...but) here's a trailer to
get ya in the mood.
Enjoy!

More of Oz Week tomorrow!

minor correction. Sam Raimi directed the Spider-Man Trilogy... not Batman :)
