"Wooly Bully"
Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs
Sam the Sham the front man for the Pharaohs ... was actually born
Domingo "Sam" Zamudio in Dallas, Texas. He came up with the name ...
the Pharaohs from the movie "The Ten Commandments" where actor
Yul Brynner played ... what else ... a pharaoh.
He was known for wearing a robe and a turban ... as kind of a joke ... and
hauling his equipment around in a Packard hearse with red velvet curtains.
In 1965 the group finally broke through with this song ...
"Wooly Bully" which spent 18 weeks on the
Billboard Top 100 ... and sold over 3 million copies.
Sam ...
***we're on a first name basis***
followed up this hit with his only other major hit in 1966 ...
"Li'l Red Riding Hood".
So ... in honor of Cinco de Mayo ... since Mr. Sham was actually Hispanic ...
I'm giving you a twofer.
Here is my other favorite hit by the Pharaohs
"Li'l Red Riding Hood"
Okay ... you got a double dose of oldies. Hope that holds you till next week.
